I Am Sick...

I finally discovered this famous singer, Lara Fabian, and this song Je Suis Malade (tr: I am Sick) written by Serge Lama.

This particular performance is so spectacularly moving, I wanted to share. Everything about it is exceptional. The quality of the singer's voice, the musical arrangement, the theatrics, and especially the lyrical construction of the song, all remarkable.

The story is about a young woman who had dreams of singing. She fell in love with a man who abandoned her two years ago, and took everything important from her. She hasn't recovered. This is her lament.

Note: The performance starts at 0:28 mark

The young woman hasn't taken the breakup well. The songwriter shows with each new verse, her mental state deteriorates. Beginning with feeling ugly and dirty, she likens her pain to early childhood fears of being abandoned by her mother. That is primal emotion.

She states she is suicidal and tired of faking happiness. She drinks every night with no relief. He is everywhere in her mind. She believes he sabotaged her musical talent.

She accepts that she is completely, perfectly, sick and cries out in anguish.

Finally, the songwriter reveals she is surrounded by "barricades." This suggests she is trapped in a real or imagined place. She's gone full mental, what a twist!

You might think this overly dramatic, but somewhere deep down, we sense this scenario may be plausible.

An observation: Destructive co-dependent love affairs sometime result in exquisitely beautiful music. The emotion of a broken heart is universally understood regardless of place, time, or language. When that feeling is captured and conveyed in an artistic creation, that is magic.

We all experience similar feelings, and hearing something that touches our core, we can appreciate the depth and reach of our shared humanity.

Here is Lara Fabian singing "Perdere l'amore" by Massimo Ranieri.
This song is about a broken heart at middle age....... ðŸ’”

Here is Lara Fabian singing "Caruso" by Lucio Dallo. This was written about famous Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. The visual imagery in these lyrics is breathtaking.

Caruso

This song is titled "Adagio" for which she wrote both Italian and English lyrics. This is her own interpretation. This is her unique theatrical artistry.

IMO. Lara Fabian is an extraordinary entertainer.

Thanks to the internet, she is finally getting the recognition she deserves.
